Picking up the story a month after Fate Kaleid Prisma Liner Illya we find the girls back in school and planning a summer trip to the beach. Of course nothing stays quiet for long in anime land, and the magical girls are needed to set things right.
If you’ve read my post about the first season, you’ll know I fell head over heels in love with Illya and Miyu. We are now 2 episodes in and things are already action packed. The Ley lines that were disturbed in the first season now need to be recharged, and while doing so, an accident occurs that causes a major new enemy to appear.
This entire concept is basically a spinoff fanservice show to Fate/Stay Night and so it surprises me at how well crafted the whole thing is. The animation is top notch, the character designs are beautiful and the script is also very good with lots of laughs throughout.
Forever the highlight of mahou shoujo anime, the transformation scenes are absolutely gorgeous, and I hate to say it, MUCH BETTER than those we are seeing in Sailor Moon Crystal. I feel a bit guilty saying this, but Crystal is being outclassed by a lowly fanservice moe-fest and that stings just a little.
I love the humour in Fate/Kaleid, even though it does sometimes go for the low hanging fruit. The hyper girl, the hints at girl on girl romance, the extremely lazy sibling and the always squabbling Rin and Luvia, they all add their bits to give 2wei! the perfect balance of magic, drama and comedic relief.
The girl x girl theme has been very strong already in the first 2 episodes, so this will obviously be a major plot point that was hinted at times in the first season. Miyu is showing signs of romantic interest, and Illya is ill equipped to even notice her friend’s actions. It comes off as cute/naive and the way the other girls react is priceless.
It has dawned on me that my watchlist this season is.. slightly bigger than i’d first thought. I obviously need to be a bit more choosy. In saying that, Fate Kaleid Liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei! is definitely staying on my watch list, and if you’re a fan of cute magical girls, i’d say add it to yours as well.
